Mazie's Story of Survival

Paw Prints Animal Rescue rescued and placed over 400 dogs into loving homes last year. We are often asked about our rescues, what it takes to save a rescue, and how as an all volunteer nonprofit organization we can make such a difference. Mazie is just one of over 50 dogs and puppies currently in our program. Each one has their own story of survival, as do the many cats and kittens in our program.

Mazie's story begins on a rainy March night in Wake County. She was hit by a car on a bridge and left for dead. A good samaritan came along and picked her wet, shivering, mangled body and rushed her to an emergency vet. Her story could have ended there - but it didn't. This wonderful family paid for a nights stay at the emergency vet and contacted Paw Prints Animal Rescue the next morning. We were able to get Mazie to one of our partner vets and get her the medical attention she needed and deserved. After several hours of trying to save her leg, the leg was amputated. Mazie had a long recovery ahead of her. She went to stay at one of the wonderful foster homes that Paw Prints is so fortunate to have for her road to recovery. Within a few weeks Mazie was getting around pretty good on just three legs, her battered and bruised body was healing and not in so much pain. We knew that soon it would be time for Mazie to be spayed and placed up for adoption.

But Mazie had other plans! The foster mom soon became concerned that Mazie was gaining weight extremely fast - could it be a tumor? Too many doggie treats that she loves? But no!!!!! Mazie was pregnant! This poor girl who had been hit and left to die was carrying puppies.

On the evening of May 13, Mazie went into labor. After a long sleepless night, with often an hour in between births, Mazie delivered 13 puppies. Unfortunately 2 did not survive, but that is not surprising due to the horrific medical ordeal that Mazie went through. The eleven puppies are growing like weeds. Mazie is a very proud and good momma ensuring that each of the eleven gets plenty of cleaning and plenty to eat! If you would like to know more about how puppies develop (when their eyes open, when they can hear, when they can walk, etc.) visit www.wikifido.com/page/The+Stages+of+Puppy+Development?t=anon

Stop back and view the slide show for updated pictures. We will add additional pictures as the puppies develop. There are many ways that you can SUPPORT Paw Prints Animal Rescue. As you can imagine, Mazie's medical bills are tremendous. Please consider making a donation to support Mazie.
